Placemaking & Tactical Urbanism

Exploring and testing the future of places

How can I experiment with a spatial transformation together with residents? How can I involve local communities in activating public spaces? How can I foster a sense of place?

Tactical urbanism and placemaking equip urban planners and other city makers with the means to envision and test the future of public spaces. We assist cities in developing intervention strategies that deliver human-centered design principles, enhancing quality of life, and fostering a sense of place and belonging.

The goal of tactical urbanism is to catalyze positive change in urban environments by testing ideas quickly, gathering feedback from residents, and demonstrating the potential of larger, more permanent interventions. By allowing residents to actively participate in the improvement of their communities and by providing tangible examples of what is possible, tactical urbanism can help to foster a sense of ownership, creativity, and innovation in urban planning processes.

Placemaking shares much of its characteristics with tactical urbanism as a collaborative approach to urban planning, design, and management that focuses on creating and enhancing public spaces to improve the quality of life and strengthen communities. It specifically focuses on creating places that not only serve practical functions but also inspire a sense of place and belonging, identity, and pride among residents and visitors alike.

Spatial strategies and creative concepts

Development of prototypes and creative ideas to test scenarios for the future. Through participatory workshops and collaborative ideation we create plans to develop and implement any spatial intervention.

On-site interventions and activations

Design, production and implementation of participatory or tactical urbanism interventions.Either to activate underused spaces or to gather residents’ ideas – our installations, spatial activations and experiences won’t go unnoticed.

Human-centered design principles

We process and condense all learnings from participatory activities, interventions and tests into actionable design principles – contextualised and human-centric.
